our prosperity planning methodology
One of the key challenges in service businesses is...
Our profitability often depends on reducing the cost of labor (which is a deceptively bloodless way of saying “paying people as little as possible”).
This is a real and urgent problem at the center of our service businesses.
But there are other creative, generative ways of increasing productivity while reducing labor costs without exploiting people. I deliberately build business systems that prioritize caring for my staff with as much generosity and tenderness as they give to our cherished clients.
Employee flourishing is one of my metrics of true success. In one of my businesses, for example, 57% of our salon employees were able to purchase their own home in Santa Barbara, a market where the average house costs $900,000.
At the same time, I reduced my employee payroll from 65% to 35% while still paying myself a living wage to work on the business and making a bottom-line profit.
And that’s what I want to teach you how to do, too.
Here’s another enduring challenge in our service businesses: we treat ourselves -- the founders and leaders and owners of our business -- as “human resources”.
That means we work relentlessly. We work all hours. We fill in the gaps with our own time and energy -- and that overwork which can cost us our health, our relationships, and our families.
It can even cost us our confidence in ourselves and the businesses we built.
Is this what success is supposed to feel like?
I want you to know it doesn’t have to be this way.
You can do business in a way that nourishes your life, your bottom line, your team AND our communities.
